Tupac was fatally shot on September 7th 1996, while he was leaving a prizefight featuring Mike Tyson. His album All Eyez On Me peaked charts all across the USA and in many ways began the intersection of rap and activism. Despite his controversial lifestyle, Tupac quickly became one of the most respected rappers of all time. Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur was a Black Panther, and shaped Pac to be the outspoken revolutionary that he is know to be. Tupac Amaru Shakur was a legendary rapper who combined hip- hop with activism. Angie attempted to make Starr, Seven, and all the characters in The Hate U Give roses in their own ways. Tupac penned a poem called “The Rose That Grew From Concrete.” It’s a metaphor for young people who grow up in bad situations but are still something to be in awe of. His revolutionary spirit and Activism allowed for Angie’s new perspective. Tupac helped Angie to realize that her story mattered. She says that in a way, Tupac and hip-hop showed her who she was- and aims to do the same for black youth with The Hate U Give. While writing the book, Angie claims to have listened to Tupac’s words of wisdom for inspiration. If you read closely enough, you’ll notice that Big Mav is described to look exactly like the greatest- Tupac Shakur. And in case you missed it- Starr sports a bandana on the cover of THUG, which can only be attributed to ‘Pac’s signature look. In a way, Starr is a tribute to the life of Tupac, and the daughter he never had. Though Tupac never had a daughter, he always claimed that he would name his daughter Starr.
When deciding on a name for her main character, Angie drew inspiration from The Greatest himself. Though It’s obvious that that title The Hate U Give came from Tupac, there are many other hidden places in the book that Tupac inspired! Starr Carter So when I saw that in the video, it was like a sign.” Tupac and The Hate U Give We see it in the form of anger and we see it in the form of riots. When these unarmed black people lose their lives, the hate they’ve been given screws us all. When I when I saw him explain what it means, it hit me that that’s not just in my book, but that’s what we see in society.
In an interview with Cosmo, Angie Thomas said “When we were trying to figure out a title for the book, I came across a YouTube clip of him discussing THUG LIFE. Starr vows to keep the memory of Khalil alive by always standing up against racial injustice. Devante testifies in court against King and helps get him a long sentence. The neighborhood stands up against King in courage to reject his dominance. Devante was helped to get out of Kings Lords by being sheltered by Carlos through Maverick. Starr is joined in a riot by her boyfriend Chris, Seven, and a King Lord’s member to defend the store against King. In school, she is met by some racist remarks that question the persona she had developed in school. She soon joins the protests controlled by police officers with riot gear. Starr steps up to become a public figure in addressing the case of brutality.

The jury fails to reach a guilty verdict for the officer who killed Khalil and the neighborhood has a series of peaceful protests. Maverick purchases a store that Starr and her stepbrother work in. Maverick gets his release, and he quits the gang after he took the blame for the crime he did not commit, to protect King, the leader. Carlos raised Starr as his daughter after her father Maverick was sent to jail. Starr becomes interviewed about the events after being advised by Carlos, her uncle, who is a detective. Starr is forced to hide the incident from her friends and boyfriend in school. The people investigating keep Starr as a secret witness. The murder makes news quickly, and the media spin the story to paint Khalil as a drug dealer who provoked the officer.
They are pulled over by a white officer and the events leading to Khalil being shot thrice as Starr watched. One night on the weekend, the police shut down a party she was attending. She attends mostly white boarding school even though her family is low income.
